Economic Stimulus Checks

24 04 2008

The big debate: what impact will the Economic Stimulus package have on American families and the economy in general? If you’re like me, you’ve already spent the money a hundred different ways in your head. Wouldn’t it be nice to go on a giant shopping spree? Maybe take that vacation you’ve always wanted? My hunch is that most people will either buy a big ticket item, like a lawn mower or plasma TV, or they will pay down credit card debt. We all know what we should be doing with it… ahem, Where’s that mortgage bill again? Didn’t I start an IRA once upon a time? Did we ever open that 529 account for the kids? If only this was something we could count on every so often, it might not be quite so overwhelming deciding what the heck to do with the check when it comes. Hey, you only live once, right? Maybe you should splurge.

Anyhow, I just found out my check is coming SOON. So I’m busy making lists of pros and cons for every idea I can think of on how to spend it (or save it). Driving my husband crazy, by the way. Check out this chart to see when you can expect your check. Hope you filed your taxes this year… by direct deposit…

What a rip off. Did anyone else receive a smaller check than promised? I hate to sound ungrateful, but if you say you’re giving people a certain amount of money and then you give them less than you promised, those people come out feeling cheated. Thank you Mr. President…

Yes, we are a married couple, promised $1200 and we got $600 because we used the energy tax credits this year and lowered our tax liability. We usually pay in about $1000, but this year it was about $400. So our stimulus pay got cut.
I am still trying to figure out how the people with SSI payments that pay in NO TAXES are getting a stimulus check.
I think the whole thing was just another big boggled mess by the Bush administration. The billions spent on letters sent before and after could have been better spent by giving it to us.
Hey, Stephanie! Don’t feel bad about seeming ungrateful. It was YOUR money in the first place, remember?

My wife, baby son and I got ripped too. We were supposed to receive $1500 and got $900 instead… also because of tax-related reasons, as far as I can tell. We recently moved into our first home, and we wanted to use the money to buy both a washer-and-dryer set and a new bed, but we had to settle for just the washer and dryer. These kinds of tax-related exceptions should have been made clear to the public ahead of time so that people would not be let down like we now are.
